April Meeting
NECKLACE CHALLENGE
SAPCG is having a necklace challenge for guild members.  The challenge is to use the
following poem as inspiration to make a necklace:

THE GREY THREAD
My life is a grey thread,
A thin grey stretched out thread,
And when I trace its course, I moan:
How dull!  How dead!

But I have gay beads.
A pale one to begin,
A blue one for my painted dreams,
And one for sin,
Gold with coiled marks,
Like a snake’s skin.

For love an odd bead
With a deep purple glow;
A green bead for a secret thing
That few shall know;
And yellow for my thoughts
That melt like snow.

A red bead for my strength,
And crimson for my hate;
Silver for the songs I sing
When I am desolate;
And white for my laughter
That mocks trickster fate.

My life is a grey thread
Stretching through Time's day;
But I have slipped gay, gorgeous beads on it
To hide the grey.

The purpose of the challenge is to stretch our creativity in directions we may
not have gone before.  Use polymer clay to create a necklace that tells the
story of your life.  Don’t think you have to make the beads as described in the
poem – tell your story in your own way.

Rules:
The entry must be a necklace
Mixed media is acceptable and appropriate, but polymer clay must be a
significant element
DUE AT THE APRIL MEETING
Be prepared to spend 1-2 minutes presenting your necklace and sharing at
least part of the story it tells. If you included elements that are too personal to
share, that’s okay, you don’t have to explain the whole necklace.
Although I hope everyone will participate in this challenge for the creative
growth and to share something of yourselves with your fellow artists, there will
be prizes.

After everyone has shared their necklaces, we will collectively score the
entries using the following scoring criteria:
Symbolism and story telling – 30%
Creative use of polymer clay – 30%
Technical skills – 20%
Overall Visual appeal – 20%
